Police raids shut down five internet gambling venues
Malaysian police in Kuala Lumpur report that five internet 'mini casinos’ in the suburbs have been raided and shut down following complaints from neighbouring businesses.
Five people, aged 20 to 35, working at the casinos were detained, and a total of 65 computers were seized, a spokesman revealed.
Neighbouring business owners said that the gaming outlets operated almost round-the-clock and that patrons were noisy, aggressive and disruptive.
Senior police official Azman Mohd Isa said police observed the casinos for about a week before embarking on the raids, which involved both undercover operations and overt police action.
"One of the outlet's online jackpot games had bets totalling RM200,000," said Azman, adding the operators were shocked when police flashed their identification cards.
"If the operators had suspected our presence, they would have switched their online games server to another server to hide their gambling sites and doing that would only take a few seconds," he said regarding the undercover element in the operation.
Six customers were also detained for questioning, and RM2,131 in bets was also confiscated, he said, adding that all five premises were equipped with closed-circuit television cameras
